Style Chambre Kalverringdijk 17, Noorderhuis, temporarily closed due to renovation

The Noorderhuis, located at Kalverringdijk 17, is temporarily closed from November 2024 due to renovation.

History

The Noorderhuis, front house, dates from around 1650. Several renovations occurred when the property stood on Lagelaan in Zaandijk (until 1970). In 1970, the very dilapidated premises were taken to the Zaanse Schans by deck barges. In 1972, after being transferred to the Zaanse Schans, the property was set up as a museum where furniture, costumes, and paintings gave a fine picture of how a Zaanish merchant family lived in the 19th century. The museum was run for 20 years by Dirk and Lyda Kind-Bosman. In April 2010, the museum closed its doors for good, and, after a major renovation in 2011, the building was given the destination of bed & breakfast until 2023.

Renovation interior 2024

After the bed & breakfast closed, the Zaanse Schans Foundation invested heavily in renovating the interior in 2024. For the first time in 60 years, the interior of the Noorderhuis will be renovated and brought back to the Empire style. Our skilled painters will work long spring and summer to bring the period room back to the Empire style.

Open to the public since June 2024

Since November 2024, it has been temporarily closed due to the renovation of the Noorderhuis – Style Chambres. The historic building, originally built around 1650 and located at Kalverringdijk 17, has been enlarged and embellished over the centuries. Once the home of prosperous Zaandijker merchants such as the pelder Jan van Bergen (1755-1824) and the oil manufacturer Jacob Vis (1784-1828) and their families, it is now a National Monument with a style room that has been renovated for the first time in 60 years and brought back to its beautiful Empire style. Walk in and imagine yourself as a real merchant in the 1650s Zaanse merchant house. Get carried away by the stories of the former residents and experience for yourself what it was like to stay in a historic merchant’s house. Come along and experience history up close.
