The Zaanse Schans: heaven for your taste buds!

The Zaanse Schans has a delicious aroma. The smell of fresh bread from the bakery museum and chocolate from the Zaans Gedaan/CocoaLab will whet your appetite like never before. Luckily, there are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can indulge your sweet tooth with a cup of coffee and a pastry, or satisfy your appetite with a delicious meal. For example, try traditional Dutch pancakes at Pancake Restaurant De Kraai. You could also book a table at Restaurant De Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis, a charming riverside restaurant with its own jetty and patio.

Fancy an enormous Dutch pancake with a diameter of 29 centimetres? If so, then take a seat in Pancake Restaurant De Kraai’s charming dining room or patio. Besides pancakes, we also serve a variety of sandwiches, salads, soup, and coffee/tea accompanied by a range of pastries. Pancake Restaurant De Kraai is located in an 18th century Zaan granary originally located in Wormerveer. The premises were moved to the Zaanse Schans in 1976. The spacious restaurant can seat around 200 guests. The vintage Dutch design with a typical Zaan Smuiger tiled fireplace ensures a charming atmosphere. Upon request, weddings, receptions and tailor-made functions can be organised outside the regular opening hours.

Restaurant De Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis is one of the most famous and certainly one of the most beautiful restaurants in the Netherlands. It is also located in the middle of an enchanting historic district. The restaurant is located directly on the River Zaan, has a jetty for guests and a large patio. Another charming patio is located at the front of the restaurant, on the main road through the Zaanse Schans. There is an à la carte menu, a brasserie menu and a delightful authentic bar called ‘Het Vleethuis’ (the Driftnet House). Here, you can sample a variety of beers, including the original Zaan-brewed Breugem beer. The restaurant also has a variety of rooms suitable for a wide range of guests and occasions. The building consists of three historic buildings that now make up a single entity: a Westzaan orphanage built in 1717, a merchant’s house and a storehouse. You can also rent rooms and organise special tailor-made packages at Restaurant De Hoop op d’Swarte Walvis.

Everybody is welcome in the delightfully renovated museum café, regardless of whether you’re a museum visitor. The café has a stunning view of the Kalverpolder and the windmills along the River Zaan. A cup of coffee or tea and a snack is the perfect way to begin or end your visit to a museum or the Zaanse Schans. Furthermore, the museum café is in a wonderfully peaceful spot on the 6.5 km long Laarzenpad that runs through the Kalverpolder. The Zaans Museum also offers room rental and special group or meeting packages, which – if desired – can be rounded off with a delicious tailor-made coffee bar, high tea or lunch buffet.
