Beautiful scenery, watery surroundings, atmospheric accommodation, and extensive catering make the Zaanse Schans a unique place to visit. Although it is a public area, visitors need to take certain issues into consideration.

What to do in case of calamities?

In the event of a calamity, visitors and drivers must follow the lead of the “Stichting De Zaanse Schans” staff, the police and/or the fire brigade.

Public toilets are located at the main entrance, De Bezem building, on Schipperplein and near the riser on Kalverringdijk and Mill the Poelenburg. The disabled toilet, shower and commode can be found at the main entrance of De Bezem building. The use of toilets is paid and costs €1 per visit. It is only possible to pay with debit cards.

The Zaanse Schans gives you a picture of the Zaanstreek in the 17th and 18th centuries. This means – unfortunately –  that the accessibility is limited to wheelchair users because it is all based on another era. Zaanse Schans, however, offers accessible bridges and disabled toilets. These are found at the toilet group De Bezem and the Zaans Museum.

Special parking spaces are available, and you can book a wheelchair from the Zaans Museum. The Jonge Schaap is a completely wheelchair-friendly windmill. Mill the Bonte Hen is wheelchair accessible on the ground floor. The Zaans Museum and the Mill Museum are wheelchair accessible. 

During the public holidays, it is possible to visit the Zaanse Schans. Only during Christmas and New Year’s Day the opening times are different, click here for an overview.

Zaanse Schans is a famous freely accessible heritage area in the Netherlands. Enrich your experience by purchasing Ticket Zaanse SchansTicket Zaanse Schans gives access to the Zaans Museum, Weaver’s House, Coopery, Museum Zaanse Tijd, Style Room Kalverringdijk, Mill Museum, 2 mills of choice (the open mills that day), digital audio tour, brochure with map and 10% discount at restaurant De Kraai. Ticket Zaanse Schans fare is €29.50 for adults and €20.00 for children. Coming by car? Use the following address in your GPS: Schansend 7 in Zaandam. Parking costs €15.00 per visit for cars. Coaches pay € 55.00 per visit.

Bicycles must be parked in the designated bicycle racks. It is not allowed to park or cycle over the Zaanse Schans, except the Kalverringdijk this is a bike path. So beware when you cross over or when you take a pictures.

There are dogs allowed at the Zaanse Schans, provided they are leashed. It varies by location whether dogs are allowed inside. For the museums, dogs are not allowed.

No, the Zaanse Schans has no lockers or any other facility to store your luggage during your visit.

You can find the lost and found at the information centre of the Zaanse Schans in the Zaans Museum.

It is forbidden to make videos or take photos at the Zaanse Schans for commercial purposes. Photographers and film crews are kindly requested to send an application to communicatie@dezaanseschans.nl.

You are welcome to take wedding photos at Zaanse Schans. You do not need to ask permission for this unless you come with a professional film and camera crew. Do you want to photograph in a location? Then you need permission from the location in question. If so, please send your request to communicatie@dezaanseschans.nl.

Flying drones at the Zaanse Schans are regularly not permitted on the Zaanse Schans and in the Kalverpolder due to nuisance for residents, entrepreneurs, visitors and animals. You can request permission from Stichting de Zaanse Schans (communicatie@dezaanseschans.nl) in exceptional cases and only if the operator holds an ROC (RPAS Operator Certificate), after which the legal rules will be observed.

Some of the houses are publicly accessible. Most of the houses are still occupied. For privacy reasons, we ask visitors not to enter houses or gardens.
