Optimist on Tour brings young water lovers to the Zaanse Schans

From 25 to 28 June, the Zaanse Schans will be about adventure on and around the water. Four days full of water fun where heritage and adventure come together at the Zaanse Schans.

During Optimist on Tour, children discover what being at the helm is like. Optimist on Tour introduces them to water sports such as sailing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding safely and playfully—in the middle of the historic landscape of the Zaanse Schans.

Children up to the age of 12 receive lessons from experienced instructors from the Watersportverbond (Water Sports Association). All they need is a swimming certificate; the equipment is provided. The activities are free of charge, including on Saturday 28 June from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m., for those who want to participate outside school hours.

Discover Waterlab & River Flow Table

In addition to the sports programme, there is plenty of room for wonder and discovery. In the Waterlab, children get to work as young researchers with tests and experiments. The new River Flow Table, an interactive sandbox from Rijkswaterstaat, shows how rivers work and how water shapes the environment.

All children are welcome, including those with physical or mental disabilities. Thanks to the efforts of Sailwise and Sailability, guidance and adapted materials are available.

Optimist on Tour and the Zaanse Schans
The Zaanse Schans has always been connected to water. From shipbuilding to windmills along the banks, life at the Zaanse Schans has always been shaped by the river. Optimist on Tour fits in seamlessly with this and allows a new generation to experience this centuries-old connection in a playful, wet and fun way.
