Folkloreday Zaanse Schans

Folklore Day at the Zaanse Schans 16th August

The 54th edition of Folklore Day is coming up on 16 August.  The Folklore Day at the Zaanse Schans is a journey through time, exploring the crafts and customs of the past. Old techniques are revived in demonstrations such as batik, lace-making, basket weaving and wood carving. The mobile screen printing workshop will also be there this year. From the delicate details of a hand-carved wooden spoon to the rhythmic turning of the rope reel: there is something to see and experience everywhere. Dozens of people will wear authentic costumes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. They bring more than just images; they bring stories. Dance groups such as the Sjappertouwtjes from Enkhuizen, the Hoogwouder dancers and musicians such as the Hailander & Revival dance group from Zaanstad and the Onderling Genoegen brass band from Krommenie create a festive atmosphere that gets young and old moving.

Folklore Day has been a beloved tradition at the Zaanse Schans for more than half a century. On Saturday, 16 August 2025, it will be that time again: from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Zaanse Schans will be transformed into a lively meeting place full of culture, music and crafts.

Traditional costumes, dance groups, musicians

There are dozens of people in authentic costumes from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Tiemstra’s Cooperage open

A special highlight is a visit to Tiemstra’s cooperage, where the doors are open for a glimpse into the world of barrels and casks. Experience this craft up close. The interior comes from the cooperage and barrel trade S.R. Tiemstra en Zonen from Oostzanerwerf. The tools, machines, barrels and furnishings have been given a beautiful place at the Zaanse Schans, where the Zaans Museum brings Jaap Tiemstra’s cooperage back to life.

Fire brigade museum open

The historic fire engine from the Westzaans fire brigade museum is also on display in working order, showing how fires were dealt with in the past. A unique experience to witness.

In addition to all this beauty, there is room for involvement: various stallholders are committed to projects in Nepal, Zimbabwe and South Africa. This gives the day an extra dimension and reminds visitors of the power of community, then and now.

For 54 years, Folklore Day has been a unique event at the Zaanse Schans, a special day celebrating Zaan heritage that brings people together.
