The Heritage-Chambres Kalverringdijk in the Noorderhuis open to the public in July and August 2025

From 10 June 2025 to 31 August, it will be possible to visit the Noorderhuis. The historic building, originally built around 1650, located at Kalverringdijk 17, has been enlarged and embellished over the centuries. Once the home of wealthy Zaandijk merchants such as the pelder Jan van Bergen (1755-1824) and the oil manufacturer Jacob Vis (1784-1828) and their families, it is now a national monument with a Style Room that has been renovated for the first time in 60 years and restored to its beautiful Empire style. Step inside and imagine yourself as a real merchant in this 1650 Zaan merchant’s house. Let yourself be carried away by the stories of the former residents and experience for yourself what it was like to live in a historic merchant’s house. Come and experience history up close.

In July and August 2025, the Heritage-Chambres Kalverringdijk of the Noorderhuis, located at Kalverringdijk 17, will be open to the public. Heritage-Chambres is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday and accessible with the Zaanse Schans Card / Ticket Zaanse Schans. Visitors without a Zaanse Schans Card / Ticket Zaanse Schans are also welcome. The entrance fee for the Heritage-Chambres is €2.50 per person.

Your admission fee makes an essential contribution to the preservation of this historical heritage. The maintenance of the monumental buildings, bridges, footpaths and gardens is financed by the Zaanse Schans Foundation from the proceeds of the Heritage-Chambres, parking fees and toilet facilities.

History

The Noorderhuis, the front house, dates from around 1650. Several renovations were carried out when the building was located on the Lagedijk in Zaandijk (until 1970). In 1970, the very dilapidated buildings were transported by barge to the Zaanse Schans. In 1972, after the transfer to the Zaanse Schans, the building was converted into a museum where furniture, costumes and paintings gave a beautiful picture of how a Zaan merchant family lived in the 19th century. The museum was managed by Dirk and Lyda Kind-Bosman for twenty years. In April 2010, the museum closed its doors for good and, after extensive renovation in 2011, the building was converted into a bed & breakfast until 2023.

Interior renovation 2024

After the bed & breakfast closed, the Zaanse Schans Foundation invested extensively in renovating the interior in 2024. For the first time in 60 years, the interior of the Noorderhuis was renovated and restored to its Empire style. Our professionally-skilled painters worked in the spring, summer and autumn of 2024 to restore the Style Room to its Empire style.
