Event 22 June: Saree Walkathon, Indian Light Foundation
On Sunday, 22 June, the Zaanse Schans will be the turning point of a special walk that brings together tradition, community and hospitality. The Saree Walkathon – an initiative of the Indian Light Foundation – will pass through the Zaan region for the second time. Women dressed in elegant saris will walk five kilometres from Koog aan de Zaan to the Zaanse Schans and back, symbolising the connection between cultures and generations.
The walk is open to women of all backgrounds. Those who do not have a sari can borrow one on site. Experienced drapers help participants fold this traditional Indian garment, which is worn in countless ways and comes in no specific size. The result is a colourful ribbon of colour and movement winding its way through the historic landscape.
The Zaanse Schans Foundation warmly welcomes participants on this day to the Noorderhuis, which will be opened especially for the occasion. There, they will be received with a warm gesture: a moment of rest with something tasty to eat and drink, surrounded by stories and history. For many, it will be their first introduction to the heritage of the Zaan region, which on this day will be enriched with a touch of world culture.
The Saree Walkathon is more than a walk: it is an invitation to meet, explore and appreciate each other’s backgrounds. The Zaanse Schans is proud to be a stop on this colourful route.
